Language Arts

Language distinguishes humankind from the rest of the animal world. It is a form of human expression that belongs only to humankind. It is the most novel tool used by humans, and facilitates all other invention.

There is a lot we know about language and how it works. Language is an example of the way a person develops, it also illustrates the child’s development in general. Through repetition a person is able to learn another language.

Judaism teaches that Speech and language is the way a person can reveal their essence. The letters of speech draw down the intellect, being able to communicate a person’s thoughts. Through speech one can experience another person’s feelings. Speech can affect not only the person you are talking to but the person who is talking ; as with love , and anger . By someone speaking words of love a person arouses that feeling of love. In the same manner speaking expands your intellect; by a person explaining a concept through speech the concept itself expands. Speech in some ways is more novel than thoughts and feelings, since they are expressed through it. When you speak you are taking intellect and emotion and drawing it out through speech in a more expansive way, adding your essence to the original thought and emotion. This is one of the reasons the creation of the world is compared to speech, because we can see the inner intent of the Creator by observing the creation, which is the ‘speech’ of the Creator.
